Nurturing Motivated Teens in California

The Young Dreamer Network of Redwood City engages youth on the Peninsula in service-learning, leadership development, career awareness and international travel. Our mission is to empower young people to become difference makers in their communities, and the ability to achieve their true potential through the understanding of their passions and gifts and how they fit the needs of the world.

We began working locally on this mission last fall with a group of freshmen and sophomores from Summit and Everest high schools Redwood City. We've been meeting together every week since November in addition to conducting community service projects and touring local workplaces on the weekends and during breaks from school. This is an exceptional group of young people. It gives us great hope to know that the future -- our future -- is in their hands.

With this pilot group, in our first year running the program domestically, we have focused on self-discovery exercises, tutoring and mentoring young children to develop as leaders, planning a major community service project, and fundraising for an international service trip to Guatemala in August. They now have their sights set on two major goals for the second half of this year.

The first goal is to finish their fundraising and go on their volunteer trip where they will meet and serve alongside our Young Dreamers in Guatemala. This trip will open their hearts and minds to a completely different part of the world. It will expose them to the modest living conditions of the developing world, and inspire them to make a difference.

The second goal is to launch an anti-bullying campaign on The Peninsula to decrease the rate of bullying in their community and to effectively address it when it occurs. This campaign will include the production of documentary videos, a large youth rally with a well-known celebrity, school assemblies, and classroom curriculum. Dream Volunteers is made up of people who love to travel, strive to make a difference in the lives of others and have a thirst for experiencing new cultures. Dream Volunteers has been running volunteer trips to Africa, Latin America and India since 2007. The mission is to provide volunteers with a unique cultural experience, exposure to a new part of the globe and the opportunity to open their hearts and minds to the realities of the developing world. We have set up a long-term presence in the communities we serve, focusing our efforts on education and youth development. Our trips entail a combination of volunteer work, cultural activities and site-seeing.
